Remembering Creative Innocence

Remembering Creative Innocence

“When you come back into the alignment of innocence, you can allow True Creation to be inspired in the moment. You can create from joy, love and passion. And you’ll actually be a far more powerful creator, creating for the joy of creating. Playing for the fun of playing. And in that, you will summon even more energy.” (Sara Langdon)

Children are masters of creative innocence. They move from activity to activity with a sense of excitement, wonder and fun. They don’t see lack or limitation when they use their imagination to create different realities and possibilities. They just enjoy the freedom of getting caught up in the delight of playing, just for the pure joy of it. It’s quite different as an adult when all the expectations and responsibilities crowd in. Worrying about what we ‘should’ do, factoring in other people’s needs, and trying to avoid potential disapproval, or ‘failure’. Creativity then becomes about meeting expectations, like paying for the roof above our head and navigating our fears around what happens if we don’t.

Making the Switch

I recently had the pleasure of working with a client who managed to make the switch into aligning with his creative innocence quickly and with exceptional success. He has given permission for me to share his story, and I hope you’ll agree that it’s a beautiful and inspiring example of how it can be done. To anonymise the client lets call him Fred.

Initially Fred came to me feeling frustrated, anxious and despondent. He was dissatisfied with his paid job and was looking for an exit strategy but wasn’t finding one no matter how hard he looked. The harder he tried, the more desperate he felt. Fortunately, he was talented, hard working and was so clear about what he wanted he practically lit up with excitement whenever he talked about his visions and plans. He was passionate about wanting to make the jump into freelance work, which would give him the freedom to create his own business doing what he loved. When we explored what he really wanted to do I discovered that he already had clients lined up and waiting for him to be ready! He had already manifested his new business but didn’t feel able to make the jump.

When we explored what was holding him back, the first obstacle he ran into repeatedly, was how he could financially afford to set up his own business. Understandably this generated a lot of fear and limiting thoughts. When we looked at his fears and limiting beliefs together, he was feeling a sense of lack, as he only had minimal savings and this felt like an insufficient safety net. I asked what amount of savings felt safe for him, and he felt he needed the equivalent of 12 months salary.

Although he was succeeding at getting multiple interviews for other paid work, this wasn’t what he really wanted to do and was therefore not in creative alignment for him. He also needed to give his workplace three months notice and wanted to leave so badly, even the thought of having to do another week in his current job triggered him and lowered his mood.

To be honest I didn’t know how he was going to do it either, how could I? But he was so ready and full of passion for what he wanted to do that I was convinced we were on the cusp of a breakthrough.

‘How’ is the Wrong Question

All of the ‘hows’ around making this transition were causing significant blocks in Freds thinking, which was ramping up his frustration, despondency and lowering his mood and self belief, so his enthusiasm and vibration was dropping. I explained to Fred that we never know how a change is going to happen ahead of time. Not even a fortune teller can predict that. It’s life’s job to figure out how it’s going to bring our desired outcomes to us. It is ours to allow our inner child to play and imagine possibilities that summon our joy and self belief. We also need to get out of our own way by trusting the creative process, addressing any obstacles that show up and continue taking inspired steps forwards, relying on our intuition as we go.

A Little Neuroscience or Law of Attraction

I also explained to Fred how the mind works and how the unconscious doesn’t differentiate between what is positive or negative, it just creates more of whatever we’ve been focusing on. Fred was able to recognise how his mood was being hijacked by his fears and frustration at not knowing how to make the change and his focus on how much he hated his job. This didn’t help him to be in a better frame of mind to interview well, problem solve his situation or help him to think clearly and creatively. So, the first step we navigated was Fred moving away from what he didn’t want, so he could focus his attention on what he did want. He decided to take some time off work and move away from all the stress and triggers around his workplace, so he could have the space and time to think clearly.

During his time off we were able to challenge some of the limiting thoughts and beliefs he held. He was able to adjust his financial safety net mentally, so he felt safer and more confident working towards achieving the equivalent of 3 months salary as his savings pot. This made the goal more tangible and realistic and brought it closer to him, rather than it feeling distant and unreachable. We were able to mentally challenge how he thought the changes ‘should’ happen and remain open to possibilities. He also started to focus on what he did want and spent his time and energy feeding and nurturing his passion and vision.

That’s when the magic started to happen!

In just two weeks Fred was made redundant with immediate effect! He was free from the job he hated and didn’t need to serve out his 3 months notice. His exit strategy was so sudden it meant he didn’t have to go back to his old job at all. He also received a 3-month severance package and felt safe enough financially to make the jump and started his new business immediately.

We were both quite stunned and delighted how this happened at this point, but that’s not all. He was also headhunted by two major companies who heard he was working freelance and wanted to work with him. This brought not only financial reassurance, but a real sense of excitement about his work and future prospects.

At this point it was obvious our work together was complete, but I feel really blessed to have worked with Fred. He really was an inspiration and had envisioned a really heart centred approach to all aspects of his future business and how he wanted it to grow. He even pictured how he would encourage and nurture the gifts of his new team when his business expanded in the future and the feeling of connection that would give him. I’ve no doubt that he will bring much positivity to his field of work and influence.

I hope you enjoyed me sharing this good news story with you. In our current times I think it’s especially important for us to hear success stories that many of us can relate to and apply that bit of creative innocence to our own lives.

Wishing you every success in your creativity 💫
