Therapy Sessions
I help people to heal patterns of over giving, heightened sensitivity and emotional overwhelm. I offer opportunities to explore and understand unhealthy, imbalanced or ‘toxic’ relationship dynamics and resolve any past trauma’s.
A range of support is available for clients, including empowering self-help tools for emotional regulation and growth, that enable positive forward momentum in life. In our work together you can also explore, understand and resolve any limiting patterns that may be restricting areas of your life, to experience greater freedom, self-expression and sense of fulfilment.
Whatever your specific situation and the reasons you are considering therapy, I offer a compassionate and insightful space where you can share any challenges you are facing and make sense of your situation.
I work in an intuitive way with clients using a combination of therapies and approaches depending on what is most needed at the time. Because there isn’t one particular therapy that works for everyone all of the time, I’ve found a blended approach allows for greater versatility, creativity and change.
Although you can receive longer term support, I specialise in helping clients who want to effect change in a short number of sessions. I would describe my approach as intuitive, collaborative and practical.
How We Can Work Together
Talking Therapies like Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) focus primarily on our mental health and help us to explore and manage our thoughts, behaviour and emotions. These approaches are particularly helpful when we are trying to make sense of difficult situations that are impacting our well-being and we need support finding coping strategies and making changes.
For clients that are happy to work more holistically there are also a range of somatic tools and approaches we may use in our work together.
What Are Somatic Approaches?
Somatic approaches include an awareness of the inter- connectedness between our thoughts, emotions and physiological responses and help us to really ‘connect the dots’.
During a counselling or coaching session we may use practical somatic tools and techniques. These approaches help you to access any insights, inner resources or feelings, that help to create shifts in your emotional state and help you to view your specific challenges from different perspectives.
Learning how to ‘tune into’ the innate intelligence of the body can help you to gain much deeper clarity about your holistic needs. Once your mental, emotional or physical cues and signals are received and understood, we can look at how you can address your needs differently. Learning and understanding how to listen in this way can also help to empower your decision making, so any new choices are more aligned with your inner truth and authentic self.
In a session you maybe invited to use practical tools and techniques which are designed to help your self-awareness, emotional regulation and any integration that is needed. We may, at times, incorporate awareness of latest developments in neuroscience into our work. This aids understanding of how the mind, emotions, or nervous system work and how unconscious survival mechanisms can cause a variety of symptoms. These are commonly experienced as frequent worrying, negative repetitive thoughts and anxiety for example.
Somatic Tools We May Use
Some of the somatic tools and approaches we may use are:
– Grounding, clearing and centring exercises
– Self-help techniques to improve emotional regulation, including ‘emotion mapping’, to identify emotional responses in the body
– Creative visualisation exercises to help change ingrained habits
– Stress management tools, including breathing techniques and guided relaxation to calm the nervous system
– Self-care tasks that strengthen emotional boundaries and increase resilience
– ‘Body scanning’ to practice ‘tuning into’ the bodies innate intelligence for increased awareness
What is Emotional Freedom Technique?
For people experiencing heightened sensitivity one of the ways we can quickly move through intense emotions and regulate the nervous system can be using Emotional Freedom Technique. This is also known EFT or ‘tapping’.
Emotional Freedom Techniques
EFT works by using self-directed compassion while focusing on a specific area of difficulty you’re experiencing and simultaneously ‘tapping’ on various points on the body. The tapping points correspond to our meridians, which are the energy channels that run through-out our body. The combination of tapping, while focusing our attention on any upset, provides rapid relief.
EFT calms the Amygdala responsible for fight/flight/freeze and helps the body and energy systems to release any emotional charge ‘trapped’ in the body during times of stress, difficult life events and traumas. Once any disruptions to our bio-field are released it’s usual for us to gain greater clarity and insight, helping us to re-frame past events more positively.
Benefits of EFT
Emotional Freedom Technique is a great anti-dote to stress as it releases emotional tension that has been ‘stored’ in the body, creating a feeling of relaxation and relief. It helps the nervous system to calm down quickly and brings our focus away from ‘mind chatter’ and worrying. This brings our attention to the body where our emotions can be addressed effectively.
EFT is gentle technique which feels self-soothing, allowing any over-sensitivity to gently unravel itself. This creates space to re-connect with your inner resources and re-build resilience and emotional balance. It is also surprisingly adaptable and can be used effectively for a range of issues, whether they originate at a physical, mental or emotional level. It is very self-affirming and can be taught relatively quickly, so it can be used as a self-help tool between sessions for day-to-day issues. However, it always best to work with a qualified practitioner for deeper issues especially trauma.
EFT for Trauma
Traumatic experiences can impact us long after their initial impact, limiting our ability to lead our lives in the way we wish to. By using Emotional Freedom Techniques and other approaches combined, I will work with you to address and resolve past traumas and associated memories, releasing any trapped emotions safely and gently.
EFT is also an advanced technique for trauma as it supports a process of somatic release in the body. This approach is safe and effective and ‘re-wires’ unconscious patterns, so you can change your responses to past events and gain movement in areas of life where you may have felt restricted or stuck.
